If you wish to join in the fun of Skylanders SWAP Force you will be required to purchase a Starter Pack.
Unlike Skylanders Giants, there will be no Portal Owner's Pack. The technology required to operate the SWAP Force characters is not present in the portals from the first two games. It is an unfortunate, but necessary upgrade.
The good news though, is that the Starter Packs come with many great items. Not only will you get the game and the new portal, but you will (once again) get three brand new characters.
Most of the Starter Packs will include SWAP Force members Blast Zone and Wash Buckler. Additionally, fan favorite, Stealth Elf will be back for her third appearance as Ninja Stealth Elf.
However, if you choose to purchase the Nintendo 3DS Starter Pack, you will be rewarded with three completely different characters. In the 3DS pack you will find SWAP Force members Free Ranger and Rattle Shake. You will also be able to find Volcanic Eruptor (a variant of Lava Barf Eruptor).
For a limited time you will also be able to snag a fourth figure with the purchase of the SWAP Force Starter Pack. If you pre-order most retail outlets are offering a free LightCore Hex figure. This is a Skylanders Giants figure, but it is compatible with Skylanders SWAP Force (as all previous Skylanders will be) and it has not yet been released in the USA.
Finally, all the Starter Packs will include a poster, sticker sheets, and trading cards as you might expect. These aren't a big deal for me, but I know the kids love them.
